When Michelle and I started up Possibilities in 1998, we ran what seemed like a thousand training events for people who worked with kids. At the end of each event, after a jam-packed session of team-building games, we inevitably got the same questions from the participants: "Did we have these games written down somewhere?", "Could they get a 'cheat-sheet' which described the games we had played?", and always, "When were we going to write a book with all these activities in it?". Finally, after a few years of hearing this, we got to work. This book, then, was our response.
We believe that there should never be a shortage of games and activities at play in any children's program. We believe it is important to share ideas, pass them on and try them on for size again and again (and again). We believe that our best resources are our own experiences - as children, as adults, and as youth workers- and it is through all our varied experiences that the most innovative, wonder-filled youth programs take shape. Our Power Play book is none other than this: a compilation of many people's treasures acquired after years of journeying in children's activity programming. Through these adventures (and the ones you have lived), the spirit of this endeavor is kept alive, the cycle of sharing continues, and originality takes flight.
(May you always have wings.)
And so we pass along this book with joy... the activities within were tried and tested by the most honest critics of all - the children. They were danced, muddied, weighed, tackled, kicked, played and accepted as favourites by children of many different lands, languages and backgrounds.
We place them in your safekeeping in the hopes that you, too, will know the abundance of their laughter. Stay young, have fun, and keep it unique! (go now, they are waiting...)
