The Story of the Pregnancy Cards

These little cards began when my sister-in-law, Miriam, got pregnant. I was so excited that she was beginning what I knew would be an incredible journey - one that I myself had just completed only months before. After hearing her news, I went running out to find her a gift that could accompany her on her journey, and that would somehow share my excitement and joy for her and her husband. I looked everywhere, frantic to find the "perfect gift". She had all the right books already. Flowers didn't say enough. It was too early for baby clothes. I came back empty handed, disappointed, but with this little idea at the back of my head that I recognized as the birth of a "project". A few weeks and much hunting through old pictures, printing, cutting, and laminating - and the little idea became my first set of Pregnancy Cards.

In the months that followed, many of my other girlfriends announced their good news, and away I joyfully went into my printing-cutting-laminating process all over again. After making about a dozen sets by hand, I decided to share the cards with the world and print them professionally.

And that is where we are right now! Most of the photographs in the set I took myself at one point or other in my life. Some were taken out of the window of an airplane (the clouds one); some were taken on a local beach in Vancouver (the sand one). Many have my son Max in them when he was a baby. And some were taken by my brother-in-law Eric (the hands one, and the heart-bellies one), who is a wonderful photographer (and person, too!).

It is my wish that these little cards make every pregnant woman who holds them know how special and rare this time in her life is, and that even though it sometimes feels like it, she is not alone in this journey. She is surrounded and supported by those who love her~ and so is her little baby!
